Layering
CADD Standards • Version 1.0
AIA layering guidelines are the basis for the layering system. This uses
a 7 pen layering system. Colors are used to assign pen weights for
plotting. Layers are named in the following format:
Field 1 Construction Category
| Field 2 Major Group
| | Field 3 Minor Group
| | |
X-XXXX-XXXX
The construction category is represented by a single letter
designating the type of construction (i.e. Architectural, Structural,
Mechanical, Plumbing). The hyphen following the construction category
indicates this is new construction. The first hyphen is replaced by
an 'X' for existing to be demolished and by an 'E' for existing to
remain. Refer to Appendix 'A' for a complete listing of the most
commonly used layer names.
Pick the layering system needed depending on the phase
of your drawing (i.e. existing, new, demo). Be sure to use the layers
best applicable for the task you are performing. The creation of new
layer, not listed in appendix 'A' will need to
follow the AIA guidelines. Verify the creation of all new layers with
the MIS.
The chart in Appendix 'B' represents the standard layer colors with
associated pen weights for a standard drawing. These layer standards can
be applied to new drawings by devising a set of template drawings.
